What is a porcelain onlay?
An onlay is a conservative, esthetic less expensive crown alternative that is made our of porcelain to protect the tooth
from fracturing which could lead to pain, infection that would require a root canal and crown or worse tooth extraction.
When are porcelain onlays used?
They are used when the decay is very deep or if there is an existing filling that was placed that was too large and the tooth
is starting to fracture.
Why would I want a porcelain onlay?
The CAD/CAM system that we have often allows our patients to have these less expensive and more conservative restorations
when they would have otherwise needed a crown. We often get patients who were told that they needed a crown from
another office come for a second opinion and they are thrilled to find out that there is a less expensive and more
conservative alternative to the crown.
